FROM THE PRINCIPAL: TEST RESULTS, ATTENDANCE, AND SMART WATCHES

NWEA/DIBELS Testing

This week, you will find NWEA and DIBELS baseline reports in your child's Tuesday folder.

Here’s a quick overview of what each assessment covers:

  • DIBELS: Evaluates reading skills in kindergarten and grade 1.
  • NWEA: Assesses math skills in kindergarten and grade 1, and reading, math, and science skills in grades 2–5.

Please review these reports carefully. If you have any questions about your child's progress, contact their teacher directly. Each report includes recommendations for supporting your child’s learning at home.

Students will take a middle-of-the-year assessment in January 2025 to measure growth from the beginning of the year.

Absences and Tardies

Attending school daily and arriving on time greatly impacts your child’s success. Please make sure that your child arrives to school on time daily; school begins at 7:30 a.m. and students are considered tardy at 7:35 a.m. Absences should be reserved for student illness and medical appointments. Parents of students with excessive tardies and/or absences will receive notification with each report card.

Smart Watches and V-Tech Watches

We have observed that many students are wearing smart watches or V-Tech watches at school. These devices are being used to play games, make phone calls, and engage in other activities that can be distracting in the classroom.

Please be aware that smart and V-Tech watches are not allowed on campus. Students may wear a traditional analog watch if they choose. Any smart or V-Tech watches will be confiscated and returned to parents.

Thank you for your cooperation.

IB, G/T AND FINE ARTS NIGHT—PARENT INFO SESSION

Parents are invited to learn about the Fine Arts, International Baccalaureate (IB), and Gifted and Talented (G/T) programs at Roberts on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Café. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

G/T TESTING REQUESTS

If your child is currently NOT in second grade and you are interested in having him/her take the Gifted and Talented (G/T) test, you must request testing by Monday, Sept. 16. Second grade students are universally tested and do not need to request testing. HISD is holding a family info session on Sept. 10. Learn more or register

STAFF MEMBER OF THE WEEK
Christy Martinez, Support Staff

Hello, Roberts community!

My name is Christian Martinez, but most people know me as Christy. I have been a part of Roberts for over 10 years, starting with part-time work in after-school care. Now, I'm here full-time as part of the support staff. The opportunity to take care of, support, and connect with our students and witness their growth is something I value. I am passionate about what I do, and most of all, I adore the children.

Apart from work, my husband and I are fully occupied with our two wonderful boys. I adore spending time with my family and friends, whether we're exploring new places, cooking together, or simply enjoying quality time.

NEW TEACHER OF THE WEEK
Mrs. Tehmina Koopman, Kindergarten

Hi, my name is Mrs. Tehmina Koopman. I have been in education for over 10 years. This is my first year at Roberts Elementary. I was born and raised in Islamabad, Pakistan. We moved here when I was 19 years old, and I have been a Houstonian ever since. I love to craft, scrapbook, and try new recipes for my family. I also enjoy cooking and am a Cub Scout parent. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Drew, for 12 years, and we have a 9-year-old son and a 2-year-old Husky mix dog named Lulu. As a family we enjoy camping and trying new foods.

ROBERTS DIRECTORY IS LIVE

The school directory is a great way to contact parents for playdates, parties, and class events! If you have a student at Roberts, your name and email address will be in the directory unless you opt out online. Log in at robertspto.membershiptoolkit.com/directory to verify your directory information and update your publishing preferences.

If you have never logged in, sign up for a free account to access the directory and the school store. Email directory@robertspto.org with any questions.

JOIN ROBERTS RUNNING CLUB

Registration for Running Club is now open! All new and returning runners must register to participate each year. We request a donation of $30 per child per year to help cover club t-shirts, prizes, and events.

The goal of Running Club is to inspire a love of running in all our kids. The club practices twice a week at 6:45 a.m. We plan to announce practice dates shortly. Hope to see you at Running Club!

CULTURE OF GIVING BEGINS

Culture of Giving is one of Roberts Elementary School's primary fundraisers, contributing a third of the total PTO budget. This money funds:

  • Curriculum enrichment
  • Building and grounds maintenance and improvements
  • Professional development for teachers and staff
  • Staff appreciation
  • Events and hospitality

The classroom with the highest percentage of participation this week will earn donuts for the class! Past donations have ranged from $5 to $5000 and any amount is welcome.
